George was the son of Jeremiah and Phoebe Knowles Claypool, both born in Kentucky. George was also born in Kentucky. By the time of the civil war, he was living in Missouri. George enrolled in the U.S. service on April 10, 1963 and joined on Dec. 17, 1863. He was a sergeant in Co. I, 2nd Regiment, Missouri Light Artillary. He was honorably discharged at Benton Barracks, MO on Aug. 23, 1865. George was married to Mary Harper Wheeler March 12, 1868. They belonged to the Turkey Creek Baptist Church where he served as church clerk for many years. He was a farmer. His grandson, George Byers, would recall that both of his grandparents were sick at the same time. They were in separate rooms. George Claypool died Feb. 8, 1924. They didn't tell Mary. She died on Feb. 24, 1924.
