In 1930 she and her parents and four siblings lived in a house they owned at 1411 Johnston Avenue in Kittanning, PA. Their home was valued at $1400. Her father worked as a driller at a gas well, Paul as a blacksmith at a gas well, and Gladys as a clerk in a clothing store.

In 1940 she and her husband and their son lived with his parents in an apartment they were renting for $23 a month at 911 Fifth Avenue in Ford City, PA. Her father-in-law worked doing all kinds of garage work as a partner in a garage, with an income in 1939 of $2000 for 52 weeks of work. Homer worked as a glass carrier in a plate glass factory, with an income in 1939 of $500 for 20 weeks of work.

In 1950 she, her husband, their two children, and a lodger, 72-year-old Joseph Schwartz, lived there in the apartment at 911 Fifth Avenue. Homer worked as a furnace operator at a glass plant.

Helen Erma (McCollum) Benton, 83, of 611 Broadway Ave., East Butler, formerly of Kittanning and Ft. Myers, Fla., died Friday, April 16, 2004 at 12:55 p.m. at her residence.
She was born Aug. 19, 1920 in Kittanning to William Rogers and Effie May (Bowser) McCollum.

She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer R. Benton who died Nov. 16, 1983; one son; and two brothers.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 E. North St., Butler, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the Worthington Lutheran Cemetery, Worthington.
