28th New Jersey Governor. He became a lawyer and first entered politics as the recorder of Morristown, New Jersey. He held that post from 1883 to 1885 then served as the mayor of Morristown from 1886 to 1892. He was also a member of the New Jersey State Senate from 1887 to 1892. He was nominated and served on the New Jersey Supreme Court bench from 1892 to 1893. He served as Governor of New Jersey from 1893 to 1896. He is noted for creating the Palisades Interstate Park Commission which saved the New Jersey Palisades from being quarried for their rock.
