John Calvin Harmon (b. 1828 d. 1891) was the son of Abraham and Ann (Pillars) Harmon, the oldest of their 16 children. He first married Sarah Caroline Brown and together they had 3 children - James Addison, Margaret Ellen and Avarela (aka 'Aunt Rilla'). Sarah died and then John married Margaret Donaldson and they had one son - Robert Cornelius. John Calvin was a farmer that lived his entire life on the family farm established in New Palestine, IL by his grandmother Katherine Ziegler Harmon. He was a faithful member of the local M.E. Church and he helped build the church building that is still in use there. John Calvin and wife Margaret both died in a flu epidemic just 11 days apart in 1891 and were buried nearby in the M.E. Church cemetery. A note in church membership records says: "together in death as they were in life".
