Mr. Ernest Jackson Dowling, Jr. age 90, a long time resident of Starke passed away February 20, 2010. He was born on April 14, 1919 the son of the late Ernest Jackson Dowling Sr. and Cleone Moore. His family was one of the first families to settle Starke and other areas of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and the United States. He is a direct descendant son of Soldiers of the American Revolution, and great-great-great-great grandson of the Confederacy. This is made note of in the Library of Congress Book, A Dowling Family of the South, by, R.A. Dowling. The following poem appears in the book: From the Obituary of a Dowling: My days are extinguished and gone. My time as a shadow is fled, and gladly I lay myself down, to rest with the peaceable dead. The dead ever living attend, whose dust is all safe in the tomb, and many a glorified friend, is ready to welcome me home. My days are all vanished away, Broke off are the designs of my heart, no longer on earth I delay, or linger as loath to depart. Resolved in my Lord to abide, this purpose I know shall remain, and trust to be found at his side, and Jesus eternally gain. Mr. Dowling was a World War II veteran who served in the South Pacific for 3 ½ years. He was commended for his eagle-eye vision that could see enemy planes far out to sea, thus protecting his fellow service-men. He was a beloved friend to many. He will be sorely missed. He was preceded in death by his brother William E. Dowling. Survivors are his children: Ernest "Jack" Dowling, III of Venice; Robert Nelson Dowling; John Ennis Dowling both of Cochranville, PA; CleEtte Dowling Swymer of Honey Brook, PA; twin sisters: Mrs. Marian Long of Starke; Mrs. Helen Lee of Wilton, CT; nine grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren. He was beloved by his many nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral services for Mr. Dowling will be on Monday, February 22, 2010 with Rev. Roman Alvarez officiating. Interment will follow in Crosby Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Bradford County PAWS, 701 E. Call St., Starke, FL 32091.
