John was born in Dubuque, Iowa. Played high school football and was inducted into the hall of fame. He was also a wrestler and football player in college. During WW II he was in the navy in the Pacific. He was a commercial fisherman on the Mississippi River for a few years and eventually became a nurse working first at a VA hospital in Chicago and later in St. Cloud. He was quite a story teller and in his younger days was very muscular. John loved to fish. He and Esther had eight children.
