Lowell - Della Elizabeth Polk Abernathy, 86 of 310 Mill St, died this morning in Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Union County, she was the daughter of the late A.L. and Mary Jane Griffin Polk and the widow of of Walter Rufus Abernathy. She was a member of McAdenville Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, James R. Abernathy of Ranlo, Troy Lee Abernathy of Tucson, AZ, Ralph W. Abernathy and Vernon H. Abernathy, both of Lowell; four daughters, Betty McLaughlan of New Orleans, LA, Ellaree Hudspeth, Annie Bell Waldrop, and Ruby Brittain all of Lowell; Two sisters, Eliza Falls of Kings Mountain and Lizzie Blackburn of Tabor City; 27 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Ronald Arndt at 2pm Sunday at Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday night at the funeral home.
