Elroy "Fleet" Murphy, 80, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home Nov. 13, 2007, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Murphy was born Nov. 1, 1927, to the late Lonnie and Mittie Murphy in Princess Anne County, Virginia. He was a mechanic in the civil service for 18 years. He was a longtime member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Mr. Murphy loved spending time with his family, whether it was fishing or any other outdoor activity; his family was his greatest love. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Lillie Murphy; daughter Darlene Seely and husband Edward; two sons, Joseph Murphy and wife Beverly, David Murphy and wife Judy; two sisters, Velma Cartwright and Emily Davis and husband Wayne; a sister-in-law, Helen Murphy; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents and three brothers, Floyd, Gentry, and Melvin Murphy. The family would like to extend a special thanks to caregivers, Nadine Riggs and son Jeremy and Sentara Hospice. Also many thanks to a special niece, Elaine Ethridge for her care and faithfulness during his illness.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Burial will follow in Charity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
