Donald Norral Gilbertson, 85, Valley City, N.D., formerly of Kathryn, N.D., died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at Mercy Hospital, Valley City.
Mr. Gilbertson was born Nov. 24, 1924, at Eastedge, N.D., the son of Alfred and Luella (Johnson) Gilbertson. He was baptized and confirmed at Waldheim Lutheran Church, rural Kathryn. He attended school at Eastedge. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and participated in the invasion of Saipan and Okinawa. He was stationed in Japan. After his discharge in 1946, he and his brother, Mylo, had a gas station in Nome, N.D.
He married Mayvis Person in March 1950. They sold the station and moved to Port Orchard, Wash., where he worked in the Navy Yard. They also lived in Entiat, Wash., where he worked as a carpenter. When they moved back to North Dakota he continued carpentry work and opened his own business. He farmed at rural Kathryn for 25 years, but returned to carpentry, which he continued until his death. He was a member of the Kathryn School Board, the Nome American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Waldheim Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Jeff and Terry (Claudia), both Valley City, and Steven, Minneapolis, Minn.; two sisters, Audrey Smith and Ruth Nelson, both Kathryn; four brothers, Gordon (Audrey), Mylo (Dawn), Dennis (Carol), and Harold (Marjie), all Jamestown; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Norman and Wesley.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Waldheim Lutheran Church, Kathryn, with the Rev. Brad Edin officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Monday, Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, at the chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial: Waldheim Cemetery in the spring.
