Mr. Charles Redding Gwyn, 94, of Zebulon, died early Wednesday morning, February 7, 1968, at the Martinsville, Virginia, general hospital. He was visiting his daughter, Mrs. Donald Hartford, who lives in Martinsville. Mr. Gwyn was a former mayor of Zebulon, born April 2, 1874, he was the son of the late Mr. William Gwyn and the late Mrs. Rebecca Dozier Gwyn. Funeral services were held Thursday at 3:30 from the Baptist Church in Zebulon. Burial was in East View cemetery at Zebulon. The Rev. George Porter and the Rev. Jack Bridges officiated. Survivors other than his daughter at Martinsville include two sons, Charles Redding Gwyn, Jr., of Zebulon, and William Floyd Gwyn of Atlanta, and seven grandchildren. Mr. Gwyn was the retired President and Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Zebulon which he helped organize in 1902. He was its cashier until 1926, President until 1958, and since then was Chairman Emeritus. He was a member of the Georgia Bankers Association and the American Bankers Association. He was a former President of the Middle Georgia Mutual Insurance Company of Griffin, State Senator in 1947-48 from the district that included Spalding, Pike and Coweta counties. Mr. Gwyn was married to the former Bessie Floyd of Monroe County in 1902. She died in 1954. Mr. Gwyn's father was a well-known Pike County Sheriff, who was killed in the line of duty while rounding up some gunmen. Mr. Gwyn was a freshman at college at the time. He attended Georgia Tech and graduated from Emory University in 1897, where he was a member of the ATO fraternity. He was a former member and Chairman of the Pike County Board of Education. Mr. Gwyn was a trustee of the Barnesville A. & M. College. He was a member of the Zebulon Baptist Church, a member of Montgomery Lodge No. 30 of Masons, Knights of Pythias and the Pike County Lions Club. Mr. Gwyn was a member of the Georgia Bar and became a practicing attorney in Zebulon in 1889.
