"Thomas W. Fitch, son-in-law of General William Tecumseh Sherman, died on Thursday at 147 Newell Street, Brooklyn, in his seventy-third year. He was a retired Lieutenant of the United States Navy and was born in this city. Mr. Fitch was a ward of McCullough, the actor and entered the Navy as an ensign when the Civil War began. After the war he served on the West Coast of South America. Mr Fitch retired from the Navy in 1874 at the time of his marriage to Miss Minnie Sherman, who died eighteen months ago. He then went into the steel business in St. Louis and Pittsburgh, but retired at the time of his wife's death. His body will be sent to St. Louis tonight and buried beside his wife and her father in the Sherman family plot."
