Jacqueline F. "Jackie" Baker, 83, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at the Hanover Hill Health Care Center in Manchester, N.H., where she had resided for the past few years.

Born on Nov. 18, 1926, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Alexander and Adrienne (Pelletier) Desjardins. She attended local schools and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1944.

On Sept. 27, 1947, she married Samuel G. Baker Jr. at St. Jean the Baptist Church in Manchester. Following their marriage, they lived on the West Side in new apartments built to accommodate GI's returning home from WWII. She went to work as a receptionist for a local doctor while her husband attended St. Anselm's College on the GI Bill.

In 1955, they moved to Barre, Vt., where they lived for 16 years. While in Barre, Jackie became active in the Fresh Air Children's Program, organizing families to host inner city children during the summer. She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church and enjoyed bowling in a local women's league. In 1971, they moved back to Manchester where she began work as a supervisor at the Youth Development Center for children 6 to 13 years of age. She took great satisfaction in her work helping troubled kids, retiring in 1987 and moving with her husband to St. Petersburg, Fla. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, they moved to East Barre, Vt., to live with her daughter and caregiver.

Jackie was passionate about all types of animals, especially her pet dogs and cats, and was known to take in strays. She also enjoyed the outdoors, sunshine and the beach.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Samuel G. Baker Jr. of East Barre; her children, Samuel Baker III of Manchester, Sandra Whitcomb and her husband Brent of East Barre, and Laurie Sienko and her husband Frank of Auburn, N.H.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Gemma Paquette and Theresa Auger.

Her graveside service will be held in the spring at the convenience of her family in the Vermont Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in East Randolph, Vt.
