Jay Palmer, Former Sheriff, Dies
Native of Grand Island Succumbs at Salt Lake City
C. Jay Palmer, 67, a former sheriff of Hall county, died Wednesday afternoon at Salt Lake City, Utah, following a lingering illness. At the time of his death, Mr. Palmer was a resident of Jackson, Wyo., but had been going to Salt Lake City for treatment.
Mr. Palmer was born July 10, 1882, at Grand Island to Hiram and Eva Palmer. He attended the Grand Island public schools and Grand Island Baptist college. He then was engaged in the livestock business in Oklahoma for several years before returning to Grand Island where he was employed as manager of the Independent Telephone Company. Later he conducted an artificial ice business here before moving to Jackson, Wyo., where he owned a ranch. He returned again to Grand Island and served as sheriff of Hall County. He also served as deputy U.S. marshal for several years. He was a member of Elks lodge No. 604 of Grand Island all his life.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. H. A. Lappe, Grand Island, and Mrs. Arthur Carmody, Trenton; a son, Richard S. Palmer, Anchorage, Alaska; a grandson, Arthur Carmody; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Gilchrist and Mrs. Walter Schourup, Los Angeles, Cal.; and one brother, Herbert G. Palmer, Los Angeles. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
