On Octoer 11, 1945, in Jacksonville, Illinois, a mute and deaf teenage african american was found roaming the streets by two policemen. The boy had no ID and after being labeled "feeble minded" by a judge, John Doe was ordered to spend the rest of his life in numerous state mental institutions. His name was changed to John Doe Boyd in the 1970s for social security reasons. John died at the Sharon Oaks Nursing Home in Peoria, Illinois. The book "God Knows His Name The True Story of John Doe No. 24" by Dave Bakke was written about him along with the song "John Doe #24" written by Mary Carpenter. She also purchased his tombstone which reads: John "Doe" Boyd Unknown - 11-28-1993 Life's a mystery but so too is the human heart.
