Death Takes Mrs. E. A. Broadwell
Mrs. Ella A. Broadwell, a resident of Grand Island for over half a century, died at her home, 1824 West Fifth street, Friday evening. Mrs. Broadwell had been in failing health for some time and for the past year had been bedfast. Death, which came peacefully at 7:15 o'clock, was attributed to complications attending the infirmities of her advanced years. She was 88 years of age.
Ella A. Goff was born in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 18m 1850, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin A. Goff. On Sept. 1, 1867, she was united in marriage to Cyrus F. Broadwell. To their happy union, six children were born, three sons, George W., Clinton, and Jasper.; and three daughters, Rachel Ann, Delia and Jane Elizabeth, the latter now Mrs. Jane Riordan, the only surviving member of the family, who has been caring for her mother for the past several years.
Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Broadwell came westward to Nebraska in a covered wagon in 1880 and after brief residences near Guide Rock and McCook, Mr. and Mrs. Broadwell and their family settled on a farm near to Grand Island.
Mr. Broadwell passed on in April of 1894. The family home was maintained, Mrs. Broadwell living in company with her children in this city. One son, the lamented George W. Broadwell, became interested in real estate in this city, and accumulated large property holdings in the northwest section of this city. Upon his passing, his entire holdings were given to the possession of his mother, Mrs. Broadwell.
Of a retiring nature, the departed devoted her entire endeavors of her home and family. Broadwell park, a promising recreation park for the northwest section of the city, was her gift to the city.
Besides her daughter, Mrs. Jane Riordan of this city, Mrs. Broadwell is survived by nine grandchildren and by nine great-grandchildren, and a large number of friends.
Funeral services will be (were) held on Sunday afternoon, at two-thirty o'clock, at the Livingston-Sonderman funeral home. The Rev. Leslie F. Sweetland, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of this city, will conduct the services. Internment will be beside the grave of Mr. Broadwell, in Grand Island cemetery.
