Joseph Benjamin (Joe) Vick was born August 15, 1897, in Bay, Arkansas (Craighead County), the son of Benjamin Crawford Vick and Margaret Saffira Ann (Maggie) Isbell. Joe had four brothers and sisters: Margarette (Maggie) Vick, born November 1892; Ella Lee Vick; born October 20, 1893; Paola Vick, born August 18, 1895; and Hoyt Goldman Vick, born September 7, 1900.

On May 26, 1918, in the Methodist Parsonage in Beggs, Oklahoma (Okmulgee County), Joe married Cordelia Mae Sprinkle, who was born September 19, 1898, in Magnet, Indiana (Perry County), the daughter of Robert William Sprinkle and Mary Catherine Stiles. In 1920, Joe and Mae were living in Beggs with Mae's parents, and Joe owned half-interest in a grocery store with Mae's father. Mae worked in the grocery store as a clerk, and her brother, Arthur, also worked there as a delivery boy.

Joe and Mae's first child, William Benjamin Vick, was born June 18, 1921, in Rogers, Arkansas (Benton County). Their second child, Joseph Byron Vick, was born January 8, 1923, in Conway, Arkansas (Benton County). In 1930, Joe and Mae were still living in Beggs and still in the grocery store business. By this time, Joe and his brother, Hoyt, owned a building in Beggs and a grocery store named Vick Brothers.

At some point, Joe and Mae moved to Oklahoma City, and Mae started working for an insurance company named Degree of Honor, then worked for the North American Accident Insurance Company, which later became First Fidelity. She retired years later when she had a heart attack. Joe ran a grocery store in downtown Oklahoma, and then a grocery store at 39th and Virginia. They later owned Vick's Restaurant at 408 North Broadway.

Mae and Joe loved to fish, and frequently went fishing at Lake Murray or other nearby lakes. They also loved to play games, and were excellent players at such games as Scrabble and Canasta. Mae died of an abdominal aortic aneurysm at age 87 on July 1, 1986 in Oklahoma City. Her funeral services were conducted at the Wesley United Methodist Church and she was buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Joe lived in a two-level duplex with his eldest son living upstairs, and Joe remained in his home until his son died on January 21, 1992. At that time, Joe moved to the Four Seasons Nursing Home at 23rd and Ann Arbor in Oklahoma City where he spent the last few years of his life. Joe died of sleep apnea at the age of 97 on December 15, 1994, in Oklahoma City and was buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery beside Mae. Joe and Mae were survived by their son, Joe Byron Vick Jr.; three grandchildren, Wilma Jean Vick-McDaniel, Robert L. Vick, and Vicki Sue Penn; and 7 greatgrandchildren: Ashley McDaniel, Casey McDaniel, Jason Vick, Jennifer Vick, Zackary Ryan Penn, Kenly Ryan Penn, and Bradly Richard Penn. Copyright©2010Ladd
