Obituary.
Mrs. J. P. Rathburn, of Cornith township, died March 26, 1897. Mrs. Rathbun, nee Ellen M. Hitchcock, was born May 1, 1837, in Paris Ohio. She was married to John P. Rathbun September 20, 1859. At the time of her death she was a little less than 60 years of age. After her marriage she lived in Trumball county, Ohio, until she and her family moved to Osborne county, Kansas in 1871, on the homestead near Cornith Center, where she has since resided. Mrs. Rathbun was especially a home woman, a cheerful companion, and a loving mother. Many old settlers can testify of her generosity, for when their cupboard was empty, her's was full and her hand ever open. Of her life we can only say she was ever for good morals and her influence always for the right. She leaves a husband and two sons to mourn her loss, besides numerous other relatives and friends in this county. Th funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Brehm, and was the largest ever assembled at Corinth. (spelling as found in article)

DOWNS
We are very sorry to have to note, this week, the death of Mrs. J. P. Rathbun of Corinth township. Mrs. Rathbun died last Friday at the family residence. She was a highly respected lady, loved by all who knew her. This is indeed a very sad death. As most of the children are married and have families of their own, this will leave Mr. J. Rathbun more alone than if there were children in the house. She was buried, last Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Brehm conducted the funeral service.

Mrs. J. P. Rathbun Passes Away
Died.--At her home, in Corinth township, Mrs. J. P. Rathbun, Friday morning, March 26, 1897, at 7 o'clock, at the age of 59 years, 10 months and 5 days. The funeral services were held last Sunday at Corinth Center school house, where a very large concourse of friends and neighbors had gathered to pay a last tribute of respect to the deceased. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. W. E. Brehm, of Osborne, from the text as found in the 90th Ps., 9th verse: "We spend our years as a tale that is told."

Mrs. Rathbun had been a sufferer for some years with that much dreaded disease, cancer. Some months ago she visited a specialist in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she received treatment for the same, and returned home with the hope that she was going to be permanently cured, but the disease again manifested itself, being accompanied with dropsy, and hastened the end in spite of all the medical skill and good nursing could do.

The departed was an old and much esteemed citizen of Corinth township, coming there in an early day. She was a woman much loved and honored by all who knew her; one who was much attached to her home, quiet and reserved, but amiable, kind and patient. She will be missed in the community; but more than all will she be missed in the home. A loving mother has gone, a devoted wife and companion has departed. She hath passed beyond the veil that separates Time and Eternity. The bereaved husband and sons have the deep sympathy of the entire community.
