Butch was a lieutenant with the Colorado Department of Corrections in Buena Vista and was a training coordinator and firearms instructor there for 11 years. He also worked at one time in construction with Jack Klugh, and then with his father and brother in the family business. He also worked for Lewis Petroleum. He enjoyed ranching.
His interests included fishing, hunting, rodeos, riding motorcycles, hiking, shooting guns, trapshooting, wild berry picking and spending time with his family. He was also a connoisseur of food.
He passed away at Penrose Community Hospital in Colorado Springs from cancer. A memorial service was held December 6, 2001 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. A reception was held at the Salida Elks Lodge after.
