Alan Loren Dunavan, 59, died April 21, 2008, at Providence Medical Center's cardiac unit. He was born on March 24, 1949 at Great Bent the third son of Ira and Mildred Dunavan. He married Janet Lynn Clayton on December 27, 1970 in Allen, Kansas.

Lt. Col. (ret.) Dunavan received a Bachelor of Music Education from Wichita State University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Washburn University. After three years teaching instrumental and choral music and two years practicing private law. Alan was commissioned into the US Army Judge advocate General Corps. His 28 years of service in various JAG positions culminated in an assignment as the Command Judge Advocate at the US Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. After retirement, he substitute taught in local public school districts, then returned to the USDB as a civilian to continue service as the deputy Command Judge Advocate.

A lifelong trumpet player, he was a member of the Argonne Rebel Drum and Bugle Corps in his younger years and a current member of the University of Saint Mary Community Band. As an active member of the Church of the Open Door, he also pursued his musical interests as the Church's music leader.

He is survived by his wife, of the home, two daughters, Colleen Sara Dunavan, Pawnee Rock, Susan Mae Dunavan and her fiancé Tim Keefer, San Jose, California, brother, Bob Dunavan and wife Janice, Pawnee Rock, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sheryl Dunavan, Stan and Mary Clayton, Gary and Ann Musson, and Jack and Pat Clayton, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Daniel Dunavan and nephew, Michael Dunavan. Graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Pawnee Rock Cemetery.
