Hercial Wayne Cobb Sr., 65, of Cleveland passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at University Medical Center in Jackson.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Ray Funeral Home with Bro. Bruce Gresham officiating. Burial will follow in Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday from 1:30-3 p.m., both at the funeral home.
Wayne was born in Cleveland on September 15, 1944, to Hercial Dean and Pauline Elizabeth Shurden Cobb. Following graduation from Cleveland High School in 1962, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served for 4 years. On December 4, 1966, he married Eloise Griffin of Ruleville. During their 43 years together, they became parents to a son, Junior, and daughter Anne. In 1967, Wayne joined the Cleveland Police Department. While on the police force, he rose through the ranks to become Chief, a position he maintained from 1993 until his retirement in 2002. After retiring from the police department, he took a job with the U.S. District Courts as a Court Security Officer. Upon ending his professional career, he embarked on what was his most fulfilling position, full-time Papaw to his 3 beloved grandchildren. Most Cleveland residents will also remember Wayne from his daily walks with his 4-legged faithful companion, Bull.
Along with serving the city of Cleveland as police chief, Wayne was past President of the Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club and MS Police Chief Association and founding member of B.A.S.S., Cleveland Chapter. He was a master marksman and avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time on the shooting range.
Wayne was a deacon at Mid-South Baptist Church, where he served faithfully. He was a man of his word known for putting others' needs ahead of his own. He loved his family and friends and will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Eloise Griffin Cobb of Cleveland; son Hercial Wayne (Junior) Cobb Jr. and wife Mary Susan of Cleveland; daughter Lois Anne Cobb of Ruleville; and two sisters, Mary Lou Alexander (Bill) and Shirlene Cobb Weaver, both of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Sara Chesley Cobb, Keely Linn Haney, and Jackson Carter Cobb, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Forbes and Larry Weaver, both of Cleveland, Johnny Weaver of Pontotoc, Terry Weaver of Bruce, Joe Morris Jr of Parchman and Brian Barnett of Rodgers, Ark.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Weaver, Allen Sullivan, Gwen Hannah, Randy Townsend, Melvin Steadman, Lanny Mosley, Wesley Cobb, Martin King and members of the Cleveland Police Department.
