Henry Diem worked for the Manitowoc co. Hwy Dept for 32 years. He began with the bridge crew in 1931, working 10 hours a day digging ditches by hand labor, pick and shovel. He also milked 7 or 8 cows before and after his day job. These were depression years in the 1930's and early 40's.

Henry Diem, age 95, of 14801 County Trunk X, Kiel, (School Hill), and presently a resident of Friendship Manor, Kiel, died Tuesday, January 19, 1993, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, where he was a patient for 2 days.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 22, 1993, at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. Raymond C. Coombs Pastor of St. Peter's UCC, Kiel, officiating. Burial will be in Schleswig Cemetery, Rockville.
He was born May 19, 1897, at St. Nazianz, son of the late Henry Sr. and Mary Ann Durst Diem. He attended school in St. Nazianz. On January 21, 1920, he married Martha Gutschow in Shebogyan. He was employed with the Manitowoc County Highway Department for 32 years retiring in 1963. The couple celebrated ther 50th, 65th and every anniversary thereafter.
Survivors include his wife, Martha; one son, Raymond (Carolyn) Diem, School Hill; one daughter, Dolores (Robert) Schulz, Cedar Lake; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Emily Schneider, Marie Gutschow, both of Sheboygan, Dorothy Gutschow, rural Kiel. He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister, and one son, Wilbert.
Friends may call at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, from 4-9 p.m. Thursday (TODAY), and Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial has been established for St. Peter's UCC.
