September 5, 1940; U.S. Navy Casualties Books, 1776-1941 At about 1410, September 5, 1940, while engaged in authorized dive bombing practice, U.S. Navy airplane SBU-1 #9832 caught fire and subsequently crashed in shallow water near Smith Island, Virginia. The Pilot, Wearne, left the plane at low altitude, but his parachute rip cord was not pulled. Wearne was dead when found, floating in the water near the scene of the crash. The observer, CARTER, was found dead in the rear seat of the plane after the crash;
