James Weed Corey, who went by his middle name, was born June 13, 1842, in Potter, Albany County, NY. He enlisted in Company I, 33rd Regiment, NY Volunteers, under Captain Edward Root. Mr. Corey had seen action in 16 battles and sieges when he was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville (VA), taken prisoner, and underwent an operation to amputate his left arm. The operation was performed by Dr. Pote, the same surgeon who that same day had amputated the left arm of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson.

On May 12, 1863, he was paroled. In August 1863, he entered the Elmira (NY) Commercial College, staying one term. In 1867, Weed Corey was awarded a law degree from Columbian College of Law, Washington, DC (now the Georgetown University School of Law). Thereafter, he practiced law in the District and Virginia.

On December 14, 1864, he married Miss Charlotte Elizabeth Caywood in the District of Columbia at her residence. The service was performed by the Rev. Phineas D. Gurley, chaplain of the US Senate and pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church.

The Coreys had one child, George Boaz Corey, who became a physician. George Boaz Corey had a daughter, Girle Luise Corey, by his first wife. When that wife died, Charlotte and Weed Corey raised their granddaughter.
