Fort Bend Herald, February 11, 2005:

Funeral services for Dayton L. "Batch" Drachenberg, of Rosenberg, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005 in the chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. The Rev. Byron Williamson will officiate the service.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005 in the State Room of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3900 B. F. Terry Blvd., in Rosenberg.

Batch was born July 20, 1916 in Beasley to Julius Christian Drachenberg and Glody Walzel Drachenberg. He passed away Feb. 9, 2005 in Richmond at OakBend Medical Center after a brief illness.

Batch served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, was captured on Corregidor in 1942 and was held captive by Japanese forces until his release in 1945. He was permanently disabled as a result of his war wounds and was discharged and retired from the Army with the rank of Captain in 1946.

He married Patricia Miller, one of his nurses after his prison release, in 1947 and took up residence in Arlington, Va. He lost Patricia to cancer in 1977. He remarried in the 1980s to Helen Poehl and they moved to Lake Jackson. After losing his second wife to cancer in the mid-1990s, he moved into his sister's home in Rosenberg. In 2001, he moved into Autumn Hills Convalescent Center, where he was residing at the time of his death.

Over the years, Batch's trips down to Texas and all of his kinfolks visits from Texas to Arlington, Va. were the high points of all of the families' summers. His jovial mood, his jokes, his wit, his humor, his laughter, his harmonica playing, and his mere presence in a room with family and friends will be fondly remembered and seriously missed.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Miller Drachenberg, and his second wife, Helen Poehl Drachenberg; parents, Julius and Glody Drachenberg; his brothers, R. B. and Cecil Drachenberg; and his sister Alice Lamkin.

Batch is survived by his sister Elizabeth Zatopek and her husband, Leland, of LaGrange; his sister-in-law Voyce Drachenberg of Alvin; his nieces, Maxine Sharp, Karen Sievers, Susan Marberger, Shara Zatopek and Pat Drachenberg; his nephews, Jim Lamkin, Don Drachenberg, Rick Drachenberg, Tim Drachenberg, Mike Drachenberg and David Zatopek; also, numerous grandnieces and nephews; great-grandnieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends.

For those wishing, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice in Batch's name.
