Pastor David Monroe Godfrey Sr., age 58, of Chicago, Illinois, formerly of Bluefield, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on December 11, 2008 following a brief illness. Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, he was the son of Eleanor Bennett Godfrey Mitchell of Bluefield, West Virginia and the late Monroe Godfrey.

He was baptized as a young child at Mount Olive Baptist Church. He was reared in Bluefield until the age of 18; David then entered the Marine Corps and served a tour in Vietnam. After touring in Vietnam he received the following distinguished honors: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Purple Heart Combat Action Medal and the Rifle Marksman Badge.

David was a graduate of Park Central High School in Bluefield and Bluefield State College. Prior to retirement he was a computer specialist with the Chicago Public School System. Along with his wife, he was the co-founder of Abundant Joy Ministries. David loved spending time with his family, cooking, assisting War Veterans and most of all he was dedicated to spreading the Word of God.

In addition to his father, his sister, Cynthia Yvonne Godfrey, preceded him in death. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife and companion of 38 years, Pastor Patricia Patterson Godfrey of Chicago; stepfather, Clarence A. Mitchell of Bluefield, West Virginia; daughter, Patrice McManus and husband Cedric of Charlotte, North Carolina; son, David Monroe Godfrey Jr. and wife Travaul of Chicago; one brother, Reverend Aaron Thomas Godfrey of Chicago; sisters, Barbara Godfrey-Lewis of Bluefield, Patricia Godfrey Gomillion and husband William of Bluefield, Georgia Godfrey Price and husband Bennie of Baltimore, Maryland, Andrea Eleanor Mitchell of Princeton, West Virginia; Clarice Mitchell Vassar of Cleveland, Ohio, D'Borah Mitchell Parries and husband Nicholas of Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Porsheia, Marlon, Dante, Kyle, Courtney, Sidney and Brooklyn; one great-grandchild, De'jani. David was admired by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, aunts, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and numerous friends.

Funeral services and interment were private. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Estep Brothers Funeral Service of Baltimore, Maryland. Seaver Funeral Home of Princeton, West Virginia is in charge of local arrangements.
