US Army Major General. He was educated at Phillips Academy Andover and received his bachelor of arts degree from Yale University in 1906. He was a reporter for the "Boston Herald" for two years, then joined the US Army as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery. During World War I, he served initially with the 6th Field Artillery Regiment, then as chief of staff of the 1st Division. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College in 1932 and the Army War College in 1936. In the later part of his career and during World War II, he served as Chief of Staff of the Hawaiian Department, Military Attaché in Spain, Commander of the Washington, DC Provisional Brigade, Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, Chief of the US Military Mission in Iran, Military Analyst for the US Office of Coordination for Inter-American Affairs, and Special Military Observer in Brazil and Italy. He was promoted to permanent Brigadier General in 1940. From 1941 to 1943, he served as a temporary major general, and he retired in 1944. After retiring, Greely authored numerous books and magazine articles. His awards included the Army Distinguished Service Medal and French Legion of Honor (Officer).
