OBITUARY :
JOHN R. "JACK" BUMBAUGH, 62, of 8720 S. McCann St., Southport, Fla., and formerly of 267 Park St., Waynesboro, died Friday, April 3, 2009, in his home.

Born June 27, 1946, in Waynesboro, he was the son of H. Earl Bumbaugh and the late Ida C. (Miller) Bumbaugh.

Mr. Bumbaugh graduated in 1964 from Waynesboro Senior High School, where he was a member of the football team.

After graduating, he entered the U.S. Air Force in September of 1964 and completed basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He completed the basic loadmaster course at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and worked as a loadmaster.

While serving in the USAF, Mr. Bumbaugh flew combat missions during the Vietnam War and participated in Urgent Fury, the rescue of American students in Grenada.

He was awarded the meritorious service medal, the air medal with 13 clusters, the Air Force outstanding unit award with two Oak leaf clusters, the national defense service medal, armed forces expeditionary medal, Vietnam service medal, Air Force longevity service award ribbon with four oak clusters, small arms expert marksmanship ribbon RVN gallantry cross with palm and the Republic of Vietnam campaign medal.

Prior to retiring in 1986, he attained the rank of Master Sergeant.

After retiring, Mr. Bumbaugh lived in California, New Jersey and California.

He enjoyed fishing.

In addition to his father, he is survived by two daughters, Jackie Alexander of North Las Vegas, Nev., and Wendy Beheler of Fredricktown, Ohio; seven grandchildren, one brother, Earl "Pudge" Bumbaugh of Mount Union, and two sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Gannon of Camp Hill and Debra Bumbaugh of Sullivan, Maine.

Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Arlington National Cemetery, Va.
