Landmark transplant recipient dies
Peggy Adams of Great Falls got brother's kidney in1964.
GREAT FALLS – Peggy Ghent Adams of Great Falls, the state's first Kidney transplant recipient, died Sunday. She was 56.
The landmark surgery took place in April 17, 1964, after both kidneys failed her. She received a kidney from her brother, Clyde Ghent.
The transplant gave Mrs. Adams of Golf Course Road a whole new world, she told the Heard last fall. She raised a family and worked as a secretary for the Chester Baptist Church, where she was a member.
Mrs. Adams also gave her time to the Great Falls Rescue Squad, where she was secretary for 30 years and treasurer for 10 years.
Her boy began rejecting the kidney three years ago, and her health slowly deteriorated.
The funeral will be 3 pm Wednesday at Second Baptist church, with the Rev. Dr. Todd Morris and the Rev B.F. Coyle, Mike Sollers and Dale Roddey officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.
Born in Lancaster County, Mrs. Adams graduated from Great Falls High School.
Surviving are her husband, Bobby Adams; her daughter, Rosemarie Allman of Charlotte; her sister Linda Looper of Brooklyn, NY; two brothers, Earl H. Ghent Jr. and Clyde T. Ghent, both of Great Falls; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends for 7pm to 9pm. Tuesday at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Great Falls Rescue Squad Building Fund, PO box 371, Great Fallls, SC 29055.
