JAMES R. MARTINEZ, Cdr. USNR (Ret.) 73, of 1252 Lacebark Circle, Chambersburg, Pa., died peacefully at home on July 27 after a 15-month battle with leukemia.

Born in Ashland, Pa., he was the son of the late James and Anna Martinez. A former naval and civilian pilot, he was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree in engineering. James then attended naval flight training in Pensacola, Fla. He was designated a naval aviator in July 1961. In October 1965, James graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Md.

Following his discharge from the United States Navy in 1968, he went to work as a pilot with Pan American World Airways for a one-year period. From 1970 to 1987, James was employed at Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, Md. During his tenure at Fairchild, he served as chief test pilot and director of flight operations.

James returned to work for Pan American World Airways in 1987. In 1991, he went to work with Delta Airlines, flying as lead check airman, retiring from the company in 2004.

During his extensive career in flight testing, he flew many varieties of aircraft ranging from rotary wing to supersonic fighters. He amassed more than 20,000 flight hours during his aviation career.

He held membership in the Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241, Mercersburg, Pa., and was an associate fellow with the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

James is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary Nell (Cambron) Martinez and a sister, Helen Washchysion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Martinez and Mary Oppenheim.

Private services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Road, or to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 2011 Scotland Ave., both in Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.
