Pvt. Harold Arthur Apitz was drafted into the Service on July 23, 1944, and took his basic training at Camp Fannin, Texas after which he spent a short furlough at his home from Dec. 12 to 21st. He was then ordered to Camp Fort George Meade, Md. He must have left the States about Jan. 2nd. He wrote two letters after arriving in Belgium. One reached his mother the 12th and the other the 14th of Feb., both after his death.
His mother received a telegram on February 22nd . "Died in action, Feb. 9, 1945, in Germany." Later this was confirmed by a letter from Harold's Commanding officer Capt. Joseph Jameson telling her that her son was a great favorite among his buddies and that he was buried with military honors with a Protestant Chaplain officiating and was laid to rest in a cemetery in Belgium.
