Ray was the youngest of 3 children of William Ernest and Goldie Mae (Handley) Thieroff.
On 18 May 1939 he married Anna Louise Cromer in Baltimore, MD. The couple had 2 children Paula and Michael.
From 1939 until he retired Ray worked for the Potomac Power Company. Late in WWII Ray entered the US Army. Just as the fighting was finishing Ray was sent to Europe where he served as a T6.
After Ray retired the couple moved to a cozy house in Lake Worth, Florida. On 27 Jan 1990 Anna died. Ray was alone in Florida.
On 5 Apr 1991 Ray married the widow Ruth Kennedy Hanneman.
Shortly after Ruth's death in May 2005 Ray moved to Michigan to be near his son Mike.
Ray's ashes are buried with Anna's in Arlington.
