Modest J. DeWulf, 97, of Lone Tree, formerly of Nichols, died Monday, December 17, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.

Private family funeral services will be held at later date. Carol Kaalberg, Parish Life Coordinator, will officiate the services. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in East Moline. There will be no visitation. Sympathy notes may be left for the DeWulf family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Modest J. DeWulf was born on June 21, 1910, in East Moline, Illinois, the son of Theophiel and Irma (Van DeWiele) DeWulf. Modest was united in marriage to Doris Lydy. Following the death of Doris, Modest was united in marriage to Marie LaChance in 1972 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Modest was a farmer in the Nichols and Lone Tree area. In 1969, Modest retired and moved to St. Petersburg. In 2003, Modest moved back to Nichols. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Churches in Lone Tree and St. Petersburg and a member of the St. Petersburg Shuffle Board Club. He enjoyed playing shuffle board, playing bridge and dancing.

Modest will be missed by his two sons, Raymond DeWulf and his wife, Nancy of Hollister, California and Vernon DeWulf and his wife, Paula of Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Yvonne Holcomb and her husband, Frank of Nichols; five grandchildren, Frank E. Holcomb, John Holcomb, Nancy Holcomb, Tammy DeWulf and Molly DeWulf; three great grandchildren; one brother, Art DeWulf of Wheatland and one sister, Margaret Conrad of Lowden.

Modest was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Doris and Marie, four brothers, Charlie, Joe, Henry and Raymond and three sisters, Alice Timmerman, Zoe Gregg and Florence Reidesel.
