Born Josephine Penale in Niagara Falls, she attended local schools. Known to all as "Auntie Jo," she cooked and baked special treats for family and friends. During World War II, she was awarded a service stripe in recognition of being a nurse's aide for the American Red Cross.
Her husband, Armand L., died in 1995.
Survivors include a son, Richard of West Hartford, Conn.; a daughter, Francesca Gallagher of Grand Island; a brother, Dominic Penale of Niagara Falls; two sisters, Regetta "Kiki" Bane of Niagara Falls and Frances Havens of Grand Island; and two grandchildren.
