PARKER, George W., US Marines Major (retired), 82, of Sebring, Florida, died Friday, May 2, 2003, in Mississippi. Dr. Parker, known to most as G.W., was born in Georgia on December 21, 1920. He grew up in Miami, Florida, graduating in the first graduating class at Andrew Jackson High School in 1939 before attending the University of Miami. He joined the Marines becoming a fighter pilot in WWII and the Korean War. After being awarded numerous service medals during his distinguished military career, he retired from the Marines. He attended the University of Iowa receiving a PHD in Economics and accepted a position at Mississippi State University. After retiring from Mississippi State as a full professor, he moved to Sebring, Florida. Among his accomplishments he served on the Board of Directors of the Military Officers Association and is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his ex-wife, Marge; three sons, Jimmie, Richard and Tom; two sisters, Valree Rhoade and Louise Ullman; and two brothers; Carroll and Waldo. He enjoyed golf and was a member of Sebring Municipal Golf Course. Services will be held Friday, May 9, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel at the Purcell Funer al Home, 114 W. Noble Ave., Bushnell, Florida, with interment to follow in the Bushnell Military Cemetery.
