Basil was born on the eastern edge of Kilgore. According to John G. Roof, he lived the rustic life of a farmer and day laborer. He saw many hardships and met with much sorrow during his long life. He lived to bury his wife of his youth and 5 of his children, yet in old age he was cheerful and met his friends with a smile.
After his marriage to Nancy Beatty, they lived for some time in the vicinity of Kilgore. Then they moved Shoals, Indiana, but soon returned to a log cabin on his father's farm. There Nancy died and on Jan 28, 1891, he married Sarah (Sally) Myers, and thereafter lived in Kilgore. Basil served Loudon twp., as assessor and as township trustee. Source: Rootsweb family tree
