Willis Riley Whitten, Jr., 1919 - 2006
Willis Riley Whitten, Jr. was born in Idabel, Oklahoma, on November 18, 1919 and departed this life on July 3, 2006 at the age of 86 years 7 months, 15 days. His wife of fifty years, the former Ella LaVerne Angelley, preceded him in death on June 17, 1990. He was the son of Willis R. Whitten, Sr., and Estella Bridgette (Williams) who both came to Indian Territory before statehood.
W.R. Jr. is survived by his sons and their spouses, three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The sons and spouses are Darrell and Kathie Whitten, of Dallas, TX. and Dennis and Dorthea Whitten of Idabel. The grandchildren are; Glenn Whitten and wife Laura of Allen, TX, Greg Whitten and wife Melinda of McKinney, TX, and Karen Fought and husband Danny of Allen, TX.. Great-Grandchildren Riley, Caroline, Caleb, Catherine, Brenna, Aaron, Sam, Sterling and Annika will miss "Great Granddad Whitten".
Mr. Whitten was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of Idabel.
     W. R. Jr., served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Combat Infantryman in Europe. He was wounded in action by an artillery burst from behind their lines. A disabled Veteran of World War II, he was proud of his service during the war and the weeks he spent sharing foxholes with Audie Murphy. W.R. and Audie communicated several times by letters after the war was over.
Those who bargained with Mr. Whitten as owner-operator of Whitten Antiques will not be surprised that he had a bargain with Sgt. Murphy: He joked "I'll do your digging if you'll do my fighting". It worked pretty well for both of them. As far as bravery was concerned, he said "I sure hated to be the first one over the top, but I always figured that if the fellow in front of me could go, I could too".
Mr. Whitten was an employee of the Idabel Postal Service for 31-1/2 years, retiring in October, 1976. After retirement he devoted his time to expanding and operating the family business, "Whitten Antiques", of Broken Bow, OK.
Services will be conducted at the First Baptist Church, Idabel, on July 08, 2006, at 2:00 PM. Rev. Blake Gideon will direct the services with Rev. Bill McFatridge assisting. The family will receive friends at Norwood Funeral Home Friday evening, July 7th from 6:30 to 8:30.
