Ulysses Grant Burke served in the Spanish American war(1898), specifically as Corp. Co F, US Infantry in the Philippine Insurrection and was awarded a Silver Star.
After he was released from service, he was awarded land in the Edwina Community of East Tennessee. Grant set up a farm there and married Eunice Rhoda Holder; they had five children. In addition to farming, Grant was a rural mail carrier and was involved in the community. He won the election to serve as Register of Deeds for Cocke County. His wife Eunice died in 1904 at age 36. He married Molly McNabb in 1909. When his daughter Arlie's husband died in 1929, Burke helped in the upbringing of his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Daddy Burke", and his wife became "Aunt Molly".
