Lumber Man Jesse Hurd Dies at 70
Jesse Leon Hurd, who began learning the logging business when he was 10 and retired in 1961 as logging operations manager for U.S. Plywood's Kosmos area, died Saturday in a Tacoma Hospital. He was 70.
Mr. Hurd, of 2122 McArthur St., was born in Long Valley, Idaho and had lived in Tacoma 10 years.
He began learning the logging trade from his father when he was 10. He worked for Pacific National Lumber Co., at National, for 36 years and was logging superintendent.
Army in 1917
Mr. Hurd enlisted in the Army in 1917 and went to France where he supervised Corps of Engineers logging operations in the Vosges Mountains.
He became Kosmos operations manager for U.S. Plywood in 1952 and retired nine years later.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason; a life member of Afifi Temple of the Shrine; past master of Mount Tahoma Lodge 190 F&AM, in Ashford; a life member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Tacoma Constitory; and VFW Post 2127, Morton.
