OTTO R. FIFIELD | OCT. 31, 1922 - JAN. 26, 2010

Developer believed in quality

Many people who enjoy their Lake County homes have Otto Fifield to thank for it.

For many years, Fifield built homes in the county with his firms, Otto G. Fifield Subdivisions and Fifield Realty, his son Steven said.

As a developer, he acquired land, installed infrastructures and built a home each time a lot was sold.

"He was happy to build 25 to 30 homes a year" instead of more because he believed in quality over quantity, his son said.

Otto R. Fifield, of Crown Point, died Jan. 26 at the age of 87.

He built most of the Aetna subdivision in Gary, his daughter Linda Drasich said. He built many homes in Schererville Heights and near Forest Hills and Independence Hill in Merrillville.

She said her dad also loved building futures for young people as a member of the Rotary Club.

"They used to do the college scholarships for high school graduates," Drasich said.

He also helped his children's future by becoming Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 69 in Gary. This influenced his sons to join up. And that influence extended even further.

"I grew up with the smell of sawdust and fresh paint," his Steven Fifield said.

Even though he holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, Steven Fifield owns and operates Fifield Companies in Chicago, which develops large office complexes.

Steven Fifield also said that his father was chairman of the Indiana Republican Party for 20 years.

Drasich described her father as a very gentle man who never had an unkind word to say about anyone.

"He was a shining example of how to deal with life, people and business," Drasich said.

A memorial service for Otto R. Fifield was Feb. 6, and he was interred at Maplewood Memorial Cemetery in Crown Point. Arrangements were handled by Geisen Funeral Cremation & Reception Centre in Crown Point.
