Bertha Emma "Bert" Barkley was born in 1891 in Crandon, Spink, South Dakota. Bert went to Pierre High School and then worked in a candy kitchen for awhile before becoming little boys' matron. She later went to Fort Thomson where she was the Issue Clerk. From there to Kenel, North Dakota as a clerk. She went to Fontana, California to be with her sister Blanche. They went into the chicken business for a short time. She then became a cashier at the Bank of Fontana and later had her own escrow and real estate business in Fontana. She is buried in the Scotty Phillips Cemetery in Fort Pierre in the McNeil lot. She never married.
