Arthur Durhman Childress, 921-A Main Avenue, died at the Washington County Hospital, Thursday morning at 2:30 of complications after an illness of two years, aged 86 years.

Born & reared in Waynesboro, Virginia, he was the son of Patrick Henry & Martha Davis Childress. He had been living in Hagerstown for the past 54 years. He was a patrolman for the City of Hagerstown for many years and was later employed by M. P. Moller Company & as a representative of the Holland Furnace Company. He retired seven years ago because of ill health. Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Essie (Sowers) Dennis-Childress; daughters, Mrs. Daisy Divens & Mrs. Admer Sweeney both of Hagerstown; son, Otho J. Childress, Baltimore; stepdaughter, Mrs. Hazel Kemp, Hagerstown; stepsons, Ralph Dennis, Binghamton, NY. & Wilbur Dennis of Henderson, NC.; a number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews & nieces; a brother Patrick H. Childress, Waynesboro, Va.

The body was removed to the funeral home of A. K. Coffman where services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock by the Rev. James L. Beideman. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday morning after seven o'clock. (Daily Mail 16 Apr 1959)

Arthur was first married to Emma Fretwell, who passed away in 1918. He married Essie Virginia Sowers Dennis on November 22, 1919, she having been widowed in 1917. Essie brought with her 5 children from her first marriage to Oscar Dennis - Edna May, Ralph Abner, Wilbert Earl, Hazel Virginia and Woodrow Miller Dennis. Edna and Woodrow predeceased their stepfather. Arthur Childress was the only father that my mother, Hazel, ever remembered. Arthur and Essie had no children together.
