Christian came to America in 1857, passing through Buffalo, NY on his way to Wisconsin. He and Ernestine were married back in Germany, and they brought along their sons Carl (Charles) and August, and daughter Augusta Emilie. Their eldest son Wilhelm was a seaman who drown in the North Sea, never making it to America. While living in Manitowoc, their son August also drown in Lake Michigan in the "Seabird" disaster. Afterward, they moved inland to the Town of Newton. Other children born in Manitowoc County were Heinrich, Christian Jr., the twins Caroline "Helena" and Louisa, Elizabeth, Frederick and Johann Friedrich. They had a farm on Calumet Road.
