Ruth and her sister Mary were raised by their aunt (Nancy Middleton) in Chicago, Illinois after their mother died in 1897. Their father died in 1900.

There are numerous social articles in Chicago newspapers that reflect that Nancy was a wonderful mother figure. They all seemed very happy. Ruth even named a daughter after Nancy and another daughter after her sister, Mary. By the 1930 census, Nancy was 75 and living with her niece, Ruth, and Ruth's family.
