He was the son of William Patterson and Frances Shepard Patterson.
On June 2, 1859 as J.B. Patterson, he married Mary J. Brown at Manchester, New Hampshire.
Per the 1910 Census for Washington, District of Columbia, he married Ann E. Queen about 1869.

Venerable Washingtonian Was Ill Several Months With Stomach Trouble
John Bartlett Patterson, 79 years old, a resident of Washington for more than half a century died Monday at his residence, 462 K Street Northwest after an illness of several months. Death was due to stomach trouble. Funeral services will be held tomorrow and will be private. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Patterson was born in Lowall, Massachusetts and came to Washington when he was 21 years old. At the close of the Civil War he was in the War Department and afterward was supervising architect of the Treasury Department. Later he entered the real estate business, retiring about eight years ago. He was the brother of the late Senator Willis Patterson of New Hampshire and the father of Nan Patterson, who figured in the shooting of a man in New York several years ago. She was subsequently released and married Sumner Prescott.
Mr. Patterson leaves one brother, Charles H. Patterson, a New York banker; two sons, Charles H. Patterson and Walter B. Patterson by a former wife; several daughters, Mrs. William L. Milburn, Mrs. E.J. Taylor and Mrs. Harriet P. Lowell, all of this city; Mrs. Prescott of Seattle, Washington and Mrs. J. Morgan Smith of San Francisco.
