Leland William was the son of James Frederick "Fred" and Gracie Mable (Dixon) Schawo. He was raised and educated in the Seward County, KS area before entering the military during World War II. He served in the 90th Air Service Group, 507th Air Materials Squadron of the US Army Air Corps. He married 1) Marjorie Mae Johnson in 1942 (died 1943), and 2) Betty Jean Brown in 1946. He and Betty had six children: Mary Ethel, Earl Robert, Richard Elmer, Julia Kathryn, Annis Grace and Marci Ann. Leland was a multi-talented person, he worked for Boeing & Frontier Chemical Co and a number of lumber companies. He was an active member of the Triity United Methodist Church, and Russell (KS) Vetrans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6240.
