She was the seventh child of ten children born to William Lunsford Elmore (1887-1934) & Hettie Lee Hobbs Elmore (1892-1933). She married Thomas Wilkerson Matthews, Sr. in Andalusia, Alabama, Covington County on July 4, 1941.
She was the mother of one daughter and two sons. She is buried beside her husband in Westville Cemetery.
