Dora Maxine 'Mackie' Adams
(December 19, 1924 - March 16, 2010)
Dora Maxine Adams, age 85 of Joplin, Mo. passed away March 16, 2010 at Freeman Hospital following an illness.
Dora was born December 19, 1924 North of Hume, Bates County, Mo.
She was the seventh child of Florence May (Jennings) and Joseph Franklin Adams.
She is called Mackie by members of her family.
Maxine tried several jobs some of which were factory work and picking fruit in California.
She took a teachers exam and went to summer school. She earned her third grade teaching certificate. At that time there were 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade teaching certificates, this did not mean that you could only teach these grades. Just the name given to the certificates. By going to summer school and teaching in country schools during the winter she gradually got each of those certificates. When she got sixty hours of college work she received a sixty hour certificate. Upon graduating from college she had a certificate to teach in a city school.
She attended Joplin Junior College, Central Missouri State College, Warrensburg; Southern Missouri State College, Springfield; Lincoln University, Jefferson City; and back to Central Missouri University where she graduated in 1966.
She taught school for fourty-five years retiring from Pleasant Hill in 1990.
Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Woodfin Cemetery, Hume, Mo.
Minister Larry Hoyt officiating. Pallbearers will be her nephews.
