She was born in Minerva Township, north of State Center. At an early age the family moved to the Zwilling farm northwest of Rhodes, now the George Haywood farm. She attended rural school Independent #8, also known as the Eckhart School, eight years, then Rhodes High School, graduating in 1935. In 1936 she enrolled in home economics course at Teacher College in Cedar Falls (Iowa State Teachers College) After two years, the money gave out, so she taught school three years at the place where I had received my first 8 years of schooling, starting at $60 per month, a 9 month contract! Later I signed a contract to teach 3rd and 4th grades in Clemons, but the oportunity for a bookeeping job came up and I spent about 3 years as bookkeeper, parts "man" and what have you at Kielly Implement Company in State Center. It was war time and men were scarce, so women were filling some of their places. She began work at the State Center Farmers Co op Creamery and continued there more than 17 years until its closing in October of 1982. She was a life time member of the St Paul Lutheran Church of which she served as church secretary for 25 years. A life time member of the Cleo Chapter, #303 Order Easter Star where she held several offices; a member of West Marshall School Volunteers; a long time Iowa River Hospice Volunteer, being named the Iowa Health Care Associate volunteer of the year in 1995.
