Jesse Jefferson Elmore was born Sept. 1, 1832 in Monroe County, Georgia, died February 20, 1916 Geneva County, Geneva, Alabama. Jesse was the son of Mathew Elmore (1792 NC) & Lucinda (Lucy) Tait-Elmore. He married Prescilla Golden-Elmore on January 15, 1856, in Henry Co. Alabama. To their marriage ten children were born: Annie Jane Elmore-Hendricks 1856; Sylvester V. Elmore May 9, 1859; William Henry Elmore 1861; John J. Elmore 1865; Amanda E. Elmore Fountain-Miles, 1865; James Wesley Elmore 1867; Fannie C. Elmore Ward-Holland, 1870; Dollie A. Elmore Ogburn 1872; Madison Ervin Elmore 1876; & Ira Newton Elmore 1878.
Jesse J. Elmore enlisted at Campbellton, Fla.in Jackson County Feb. 1862 as private, Co. F, 11th Florida Regiment & continued service until wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, Sept 24, 1864, he was admitted to General Hospital, Howard's Grove, Richmond, VA, on Sept. 26, 1864, furloughed home to Campbellton, Jackson, County, Florida, on November 20, 1864, and did not return to Civil War. Jesse had fair complexion; dark hair; blue eyes, and was listed as being 5 ft. 8 inches tall. Jesse died in Geneva County, Alabama, and is buried in Historic Shilo Baptist Church Cemetery, near Hartford, Alabama, next to his wife Prescilla Golden-Elmore, and where many of his family are buried.
Jesse J. Elmore was issued a land patent for 40.01 acres of land on August 30, 1897 for land NWNW Sec/Block 35/2-N in the St. Stephens, Geneva, Alabama area. Authority: May 20, 1862: Homestead Entry Original (12 Stat. 392).
