MASHPEE - George P. Clinch, 77, a retired insurance company executive, died Thursday at Falmouth Hospital after a brief illness.
Born, raised and educated in New York, Mr. Clinch moved to Norwood after graduating from high school. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps while he was a student at Boston University and put his education on hold to serve his country.
Mr. Clinch was a decorated fighter pilot and first lieutenant during World War II, serving in Naples, in Rome and with the 325th Air Offensive Fighter Group in Europe.
He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Unit Badge and the European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Mr. Clinch returned to BU after his military service to finish his education. After graduation, he began working as an auditor for American Mutual Insurance Co. His career at the insurance company kept him traveling the eastern part of the United States. He retired in 1985 out of the Wakefield office as vice president of Information Systems.
A resident of Beverly Farms from 1963 to 1981 until moving to Cotuit, he moved to Marco Island, Fla., in 1987 and then to Mashpee in 1994.
Mr. Clinch volunteered for the town of Mashpee, working in the Assessor's Office for the past several years, and he was a communicant of Christ the King Parish. He also enjoyed golf and sailing.
